Rethinking Obesity Treatment with Fitness Pros as Key Leaders and Advocates

Lecture | Science to Practice
For years, body weight regulation has been framed in an oversimplified way: needing to eat less (diet) and do more (physical activity). When the reality is that it is more challenging for individuals due to circumstances that are directly or indirectly out of their control. The Roundtable for Obesity Solutions convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has developed a systems-based framework to identify external factors that contribute to body weight regulation, and more importantly factors that influence physical activity and eating behavior. Health-fitness professionals can be leaders and advocates in their communities to address and overcome these challenges to body weight regulation. This lecture will focus on how health-fitness professionals can take actionable steps to leverage these new opportunities in a manner that can enhance their professional business and empower advocacy to enhance obesity treatment.
