Carl V. Gisolfi, Ph.D., FACSM, was one of the most influential leaders of ACSM in its 50+ year history. With Gatorade, ACSM created the Gisolfi Memorial Fund to honor his many contributions to the college and to the exercise science field. This grant is designed to encourage research in thermoregulation, exercise and hydration. 

In support of the mission to increase diversity at ACSM, special consideration will be given to minority applicants and proposals addressing minority health issues.

Additional funds are needed to increase the endowment balance for research in clinical sports medicine, so that a dedicated research grant can be awarded each year to a sports medicine clinician.

Amount: $5,000

The ACSM Foundation Doctoral Student Research Grant funds up to $5,000 to cover basic and applied research by doctoral students. Funding can be used for experimental subjects, supplies and small equipment needs. Applications related to Exercise is Medicine® are encouraged.

The Foundation recognizes that education is a key element to fulfilling the mission of ACSM.  The goal of the endowment is to fund a member's educational outreach project in exercise science or sports medicine.

Established in memory of Gail E. Butterfield, the fund will be used to provide annual assistance to help fund travel expenses accrued by two (2) PhD students (one from the U.S. and one international student) to present their scholarly work at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

The Lisa Krivickas Travel Award will be given annually to a female clinician scientist in order to fund travel to the ACSM Annual Meeting.  Dr. Krivickas’ research and clinical expertise in Sports Medicine was highly regarded, and she was elected to the Board of Trustees of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Krivickas’ ground-breaking research on muscle fibers related to her interests in how muscles change with physical activity and in neuromuscular diseases. She contributed her great expertise to patients with neuromuscular disease by developing rehabilitation strategies and treatments to improve quality of life and survival. In addition to her research, clinical trials, and clinical care for ALS patients, she courageously volunteered to serve as the first person with ALS treated with a novel, potentially very risky treatment. Her courage and perseverance advanced this line of ALS research treatment by many years. In doing so, she continued serving her patients even when she could no longer care for them clinically.

Dr. Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr., a co-recipient of the first Olympic Prize in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, made an extraordinarily generous gift by donating his share of the award to ACSM. This grant is to encourage researchers early in their career to become involved with physical activity epidemiology. Applications may focus on observational studies of physical activity and health outcomes, or on randomized controlled trials that are clearly focused on physical activity and important public health issues.

The Dr. Raymond A. Weiss Research Endowment was established by the late Drs. Raymond and Rosalee Weiss to advance research into the health benefits — physical, mental and emotional — of physical activity and sports. This grant will fund applied research, with the intent of applying the results to programs involving physical activity and sports. The psychological and emotional benefits of physical activity are of particular importance to the endowment’s benefactors, and proposals addressing those issues will be given priority.

The Research Endowment has been made possible by charitable funds and individual donations. This grant will fund mechanistic, hypothesis-driven basic and applied research in all relevant fields of exercise science. The intent of this grant to provide seed money support, after which further funding would be sought from other sources. Applications should clearly describe whether the aims are achieved in the pilot and how the data will be used in future grant applications.

The Broeder Preventative Health Female Cancer Fund established in 2009 will provide research funding for master and/or doctoral students or junior faculty interested in doing exercise and nutrition-based clinical preventative research.

Established in memory or Priscilla M. Clarkson, the fund will be used to provide annual assistance to help fund travel expenses accrued by one undergraduate student to present his/her scholarly work at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

Established in memory of Jack Wilmore, the fund will provide annual assistance to graduate students or young investigators in Basic Sciences or Applied Sciences to travel to the Annual Meeting to present an accepted abstract.

Honoring the many professional contributions of Lawrence A. Golding, this fund will support the annual Larry Golding Scholarship awarded to a deserving undergraduate Health & Fitness Summit attendee each year, as well as other student and professional development programs in the Health and Fitness fields.

Created to support the next generation of ACSM leaders, the Diversity and Mentorship Fund supports leadership development programs to benefit the emerging professionals who will drive future advances in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science.

Founded through generous support from Kathryn H. Schmitz, PhD, MPH, FACSM, FTOS, Sara's Fund will enable programming and professional development in the emerging field of Exercise Oncology.

Created through a generous contribution by the family of Gary Wadler, MD, FACSM, the fund will support issues, outreach and clinical applications of ethics for team physicians and their networks.

This grant is funded by the World Athletics Federation, one of the most influential sport governing bodies, having great involvement in the Olympics and the creation of its own global events, such as the century-old World Athletics Championship. 

This grant funds human research in the area of physical activity, training and human performance relative to athletic events (e.g., track and field, road running, trail running, race walking). Besides increasing knowledge, the proposal should have a practical impact on all those who regularly participate in athletics, both for competition purposes and simply to enhance their health.

Barry, Ph.D., FACSM., and Linda Franklin have pledged $10,000/5 years in support of an EIM On Campus (EIM-OC) initiative. Furthermore, the Franklin’s have issued a challenge to the EIM-OC Committee to cumulatively match their pledge to extend the life of the grant. The committee is rising to the challenge and making their commitments.
